Our Founder

     1. Miss. Muriel Hutchins was installed at Karuna Nilayam by The Ven. John A. R. Navaratnam and Rev. R. C. Luckraft on 29 Oct, 1955. She was supported very strongly by Lord Bishop of Colombo Ven. Archibald Graham Campbell. She was a teacher by profession and at her age of 55 she started this community to improve the lives of disadvantaged women and children. Karuna Nilayam with “Vellai patti” had to struggle to live but the community lived very happy. 2.Karuna Nilayam community with other people of Kilinochchi displaced to Murippu due to Civil war in 1985.3. 1996 Karuna Nilayam community was displaced to Jeyapuram. In the meantime Amma died on the 4th of March 1996 went to her creator at her age of 97. 

    Though the Kilinochchi village after the displacement to Kilinochchi on 2003 after a few month because all the buildings were in ruins.4. Again in 2008 Karuna Nilayam was displaced towards Mullaitivu. After the final war in 2009 we were in Vavuniya IDP camp. We were released from the IDP camp in September 2009. Then October proceeded to Jaffna. And finally the community returned to base in October 2010.5. We are still in the process of being healed and to heal, and to rehabilitate the buildings.
