A brief history of Karuna Nilayam, Kilinochchi, Sri Lanka.
Kilinochchi Karunanilayam is a humanitarian Center dedicated to providing comprehensive care and support to vulnerable women in society. Karuna nilayam was set up in Kilinochchi in 1955 by English Missionary Miss. Muriel Hutchins.
Karuna Niliyam is a Centre for physically and psychologically challenged women and girls, providing education and life skills for self-sufficiency. Miss. Muriel Hutchins was posted at Karuna Nilayam on 29 Oct 1955. She was supported very strongly by The Lord Bishop of Colombo, Rt.Rev. Archibald Graham Campbell.
A teacher by profession, at the age of 55, she started this community to upgrade the lives of disadvantaged women and children. Now, after years of civil war and neglect the community is still in the process of healing and rehabilitation.
This report outlines the various services offered by the center, which focus on addressing the needs of mentally challenged ladies, elderly women, poor and needy women and vulnerable children through specialized care and skill development programs.
